Sunburn and Skin Cancer

As the term implies, sunburn refers to a kind of skin inflammation due to over exposure to the sun's UV rays or ultraviolet radiation. It also correlates the same condition that arises from a prolonged exposure to a sun tanning lamp and welding arcs. Sunburns when severe can possibly lead to the formation of other types of skin problems and even skin cancer. This is so far, in worse cases.

Sun Exposure and Skin Cancer

In the United States, many have developed skin cancer, due to overexposure to the heat of the sun. Children whose family has a history of skin cancer are at higher risk to developing the same condition. Aside from sun exposure and heredity, skin types and complexion also matter. In fact, many of those who develop skin cancer have moles, freckles and fair skin. Exposure to the sun is then, highly restricted to these people.

The sun is the main source of ultraviolet rays, which composed of the UVA and the UVB. Both are known to affect human health. Sunburn arises when the body becomes not capable of generating enough number of protective skin pigments, also known as melanin. Melanin is responsible to protect the skin from potential damages including sunburns. White or fair-skinned people must pay much attention, for they are more prone to getting sunburns.
