Skin Tags—What are they?

Skin tags are something that many people have and while they are not a mole, they are a raised bump on the skin and in most cases are not very large. These skin tags are a small flap of tissue that are connected by what is known as a stalk. These skin tags do not have the same risks associated with them as moles, which can be malignant.
The skin tag cannot be a risk for melanoma and they do not cause pain, like some moles can if bumped or become irritated. They do appear more in women or people that gain weight, and they are usually found in areas on the body like the armpits, the neck, back, chest and the groin area.

These are not usually painful, but many people do not like them on their skin where they can be seen or feel uncomfortable. They can be removed by the dermatologist in one of several ways; they can be taken off by burning or freezing them in the dermatologist’s office. The other options the dermatologist might use depending on where the skin tag is located are removal with a scalpel or scissors.
