Cold Sores: Name of Effective Medicines

Cold sores generally clear up on its own without any drug, medication or specific treatment, it takes approximately 2 weeks for the condition to improve, and after 2 weeks it is gone!

However, there are some topical treatments and oral antiviral medications for cold sores that can bring relief during the time of pain and oozing. The topical treatments are basically short-time pain relievers that can relieve the symptoms for a certain period of time. Benzocaine and Lidocaine are the drugs that help in protecting the cold sores from irritation and trauma and also relieve pain.

The oral antiviral medications can enhance the healing process. These medication help in shortening the duration of the sores and also decrease pain, if they are administered earlier.  Oral medications include the drugs like acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir to name a few.

Anti viral medications are usually prescribed by the doctor in order to prevent the recurrence of these cold sores. For the patients who have had recurrent cold sores in the past, have experienced some sort of illnesses during the outbreak of cold sores and have been affected by the sires significantly would need these medications for proper cure.
