Determining Skin Cancer Stages through Staging

Once the person is diagnosed with skin cancer, the doctor will immediately perform staging. Staging refers to a certain kind of procedure utilized to determine the status of the disease -- how far the cancer goes internally. In order to complete the process, a doctor would need to perform a biopsy to examine the tumor growth and the nearby tissues. Biopsy is so far the widely used staging method by many doctors.

When the biopsy reveals that the cancer cells reside outside the tumor, it is an indication that the cancer is extending towards other body organs. Thus, the staging procedure will then be employed.

Doctors will typically perform staging early after conducting cancer diagnosis. Doing so will help them identify the necessary treatment to apply. Skin cancers of stages 1 and 2 for instance, are typically dealt with by tumor removal.
