Boils and carbuncles are pus-filled swellings or bumps which are painful. The boils and carbuncles are developed under your skin when the bacteria enter your body and infect one or more hair follicles. It usually causes inflammation.
Boils or furuncles are normally starts as tender and red lumps. Then these lumps grow larger and produce pus. In this condition, it will be more painful and the pain will continue till they rupture and drain. A cluster of boils form a connection under the area of infected skin and it is known as carbuncles.
The boils and carbuncles usually take place on the face, neck, armpits, thighs and buttocks. Boils are commonly found among teenagers and also in young adults. People with a weakened immune system can easily get boils and carbuncles.
Mostly boils are considered as minor infection and it will heal within two weeks even without any treatment. It is highly recommended that not to try to puncture or squeeze these boils because it may spread the infection. But in the case of carbuncles, it is better to see the doctor because it will be extremely painful, may last for more than two weeks and in some case, it leads to a fever. Most of the doctors recommend antibiotics to treat extremely level of boils and carbuncles.
